Irvine Lake Mud Run Summer of Mud Returns on June 23

On Saturday, June 23, 2012, the Irvine Lake Mud Run returns to Irvine Lake at Oak Canyon Park for the anticipated annual Summer of Mud race. Southern California’s most challenging and dynamic mud run is a 5k off road course traversing trails, hills, luges, and muddy obstacles. The 2012 Summer of Mud will introduce the Titanic Tomato Toss as the newest festivity at the race event.

Irvine Lake Mud Run’s Spring Break at the Lake race in March cultivated over 9,000 runners to Irvine Lake. The Summer of Mud event anticipates being another packed race with more mud than ever before. The Mud Run will feature professionally built obstacles including jump walls, ramps, crawl tubes, luge slides, mud pits and a number of water drenching experiences to beat the summer heat.

The La Tomatina Festival in Spain provided the inspiration for the new Titanic Tomato Toss at the Mud Run. Gather your friends and start throwing fresh and fried tomatoes at each other in a tomato toss like never seen before. Protective eyewear or goggles are recommended as the tomato juice can tend to sting!

On June 23 the parking lot will open at 6:30 a.m. and the first wave begins at 8 a.m. with multiple waves in individual and team categories starting throughout the day. Runners are encouraged to register online in advance and arrive at least one hour prior to start time. Registration for individuals is $49, $196 for teams of 4, and $189 for open teams through May 4. Prices increase to $59 for individuals, $236 for teams of 4, and $229 for open sized teams May 5-June 8. Prices will increase again from June 9-23. Sign ups may be available on event day pending availability as the mud run frequently sellsout. Runners must be 13 years of age or older and in good health. Kids ages 2 – 12 can participate in the Mud Puddles Kid’s Course. Over 30 showers and several “fire hoses” will be available for runners to rinse off, and a clean change of clothes is encouraged.

Irvine Lake Mud Run sponsors Wahoo’s, popchips, and the World Famous KROQ will be onsite at the Action Sports & Eco Fair featuring vendors with the latest sports and eco-friendly products.  Michelob Ultra will be poured in the Summer of Mud Beer Garden (with valid I.D.) and live music will provide entertainment throughout the day.

The 2012 Summer of Mud race is benefitting the Award winning non-profit, Blind Start of America. The organization has the mission of helping visually impaired individuals develop job skills and empowering independence to help them to lead full lives. Blind runners will be participating in the Summer of Mud run with guides in support of this cause.
